The STAR Creative Cluster

The STAR Creative Cluster school initiative is part of Ireland’s national Creative Clusters programme, designed to encourage creativity, collaboration, and inclusive learning among schools. The programme brings together groups of schools to work on shared creative projects that support student engagement, innovation, and personal development.

STAR Creative Clusters particularly focus on supporting Traveller and Roma students, and promote inclusion, cultural identity, wellbeing, and creative expression through arts, music and other cross-curricular activities.

St Nathy’s College has participated in the two-year project, culminating with a recent celebration day in the IMMA in Dublin.

Over the two years, students participated in a variety of workshops including jewellery making, basket weaving, and drumming. They also enjoyed a visit to Sligo ATU where they sampled college life through availing of a tour of the college, and participating in a graphics workshop in the Dream- maker space. Students also enjoyed an adventure day in Willowbrook, where they created dens made of willow, and where they also participated in arts and crafts, pizza making and song composition.

At the celebration day in the IMMA last Thursday, our students got an opportunity to display the creative work that they enjoyed participating in over the past two years. They enjoyed a tour of the art galleries in the museum followed by food, and a chance to mingle and to meet the participants in the other creative clusters from around the country.

Students involved in the cluster have enjoyed the experience, and it has supported attendance, participation and retention in our school.

A Hands-On Baking Experience with My Strandhill Bakery

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dimitar from My Strandhill Bakery to our school, where he delivered a fantastic baking session for some of our lucky Transition Year students. Based in Sligo, My Strandhill Bakery is renowned for its focus on traditional baking techniques and high-quality handmade goods, with Dimitar bringing a deep passion for authentic methods and simple, natural ingredients to his craft.

During his visit, Dimitar shared his expertise through an engaging, hands-on workshop that allowed students to experience the art of baking firsthand. His approach not only demonstrated the skills involved in traditional baking but also highlighted the importance of patience, precision, and creativity in the process.

Dimitar regularly visits schools to deliver workshops like this, helping to inspire young people and giving them the opportunity to develop practical skills in a fun and interactive way. Our TY students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, gaining a new appreciation for the craft of baking and the dedication behind every loaf and pastry.

Hiking, Bonding & Unplugging: TY’s Ox Mountain Gaisce Experience

Twenty TY students recently completed their Gaisce Bronze Award overnight adventure journey with an unforgettable trip to Ox Mountain Glamping.

The group took on an impressive 22km hike along the Sligo Way, trekking through breathtaking mountain trails, dense forests, and around the stunning Lough Easkey.

A huge thank you to our wonderful hosts Monica, Dermot, Pamela, Vincent, and Mary, for their warm hospitality, expert guidance, and great craic throughout the experience.

The trip was filled with team bonding, fresh air, and lasting memories, offering students a truly enriching opportunity to disconnect from mobile phones and devices and reconnect with nature.

After a day on the trails, the students enjoyed a well-earned, delicious homemade chicken curry, prepared together and full of flavour. The evening was rounded off with a sing-song and cosy chats around the fire, making for a truly special and memorable experience.

An inspiring and refreshing adventure that will stay with everyone involved for years to come.

Improving Homework Engagement Through Innovation

Well done to the six members of our staff — Mr. Creaton, Ms. Conlon, Mr. Brady, Ms. Fitzpatrick, Ms. Mooney and Ms. Garvey — who carried out an action research project in collaboration with Carrick-on-Shannon Education Centre, the Education Support Centres of Ireland (ESCI), and the Teachers' Research Exchange (TREX).

The focus of the project was to improve student engagement with homework by providing differentiated tasks, ensuring that work was aligned to all ability levels within the class.

Mr. Creaton was one of the project leads, and he accompanied Ms. Garvey to Portlaoise last week to attend a shared learning showcase. Schools involved in this initiative from across the country gathered to share their individual projects and findings.

International Day Brings the World to St. Nathy’s

Yesterday, we proudly celebrated International Day. Students representing 29 different nationalities took part, many dressed in traditional attire that beautifully reflected their heritage and identity.

The PE hall was transformed into a colourful, energetic space filled with music, conversation, and excitement. Students and staff fully embraced the occasion, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere throughout the day.

The main feature of the day was the wide variety of food from around the world. Students shared traditional dishes, offering everything from richly spiced meals to sweet treats and comforting classics. There were even Tayto crisps! That unique taste that you can only get in Ireland. Apologies if you are reading this from overseas and we have made you think of Tayto crisps! Each table provided not just food, but an insight into different cultures.

Overall, the event was a fantastic celebration of the diversity that makes our school unique. It was a day of connection, learning, and enjoyment, leaving everyone with a strong sense of pride in our inclusive and welcoming School of Sanctuary.
