TY History Trip

On Wednesday 23rd October, Mr Brennan, Ms Scally, Ms Brunker and Mr Curran brought our Transition Year students to Dublin. Whilst it was an early departure at 7am, students were ready to head off for the day. After a quick pit-stop at Enfield on the way up for some much needed refreshments, we headed towards our first destination of the EPIC Irish Emigration Museum near the Dublin Docklands. The whole experience was thoroughly enjoyable and interactive. Students were given their own passports for the different stages/rooms that were in the museum. Each passport had to be stamped just like millions of Irish people before them had to do when leaving their homeland in search for a better life in the UK or the United States. There were 20 rooms in total at the museum that ranged from Irish culture, to icons, to Irish Sport around the world as well as our legacy in other countries. One of the favourite rooms for the students, and teachers, was the mock-up Irish bar where a much needed rest was taken listening to traditional Irish music in the background! The whole experience was immersive, creative and interactive, as well as educational.  Next stop was Croke Park. After getting group pictures under the watchful eye of Michael Cusack, our tour of Croke Park began. Groups were split into two and guided through the history of the place, the dressing rooms, the warm up areas, the tunnels under the seats where the buses would arrive and informative videos from past players. Students were then led out within touching distance of the hollowed ground! They got a chance to experience the vast, pristine and impressive stadium and how the grounds are maintained regularly. A chance to lift the Liam McCarthy was also another highlight before being taken up to the heights of the Hogan stand. The Tour guides for each explained the history and significance along the way and were so helpful throughout the day. It was an incredible experience that everyone enjoyed. Additionally, we were lucky to spot two medals from St. Nathy's in the Croke Park Museum - I am sure they won't be the last ones!  these medals belonged to Dermot Earley who attended St. Nathy's, definitely one of the best footballers to come out of the west!!  Roscommon Abu! The final stop was to The Liffey Valley Shopping Centre for some food and shopping!  Back on the buses and after some great song choices (Christy Moore, Wolfe Tones and One Direction) and singing on the way down, we arrived back home at 6.30pm just under 12hrs after we departed that morning! The students behaved impeccably throughout the day. Their conduct and manners to all those involved was exceptional and they did themselves and St. Nathy's College proud. Thanks must also be given to our patient bus drivers from O' Hara coaches who were amazing throughout the day, managing the traffic and busing us to and fro to different venues around Dublin city and beyond. Thank you very much.A fantastic and busy day was had by all.

Positive Mental Health Week in St. Nathy’s

This week, our library has transformed into a sensory haven of quiet and calm, offering a soothing escape from the everyday hustle. Soft music fills the space, creating a gentle backdrop that encourages relaxation and mindfulness. The warm glow of candles adds to the atmosphere, casting flickering light that invites a sense of peace. The subtle fragrance of incense drifts through the air, further enhancing the environment and helping to ground visitors in the present moment.

Students are invited to step away from the usual distractions and draw their attention inward, focusing on the here and now. It’s a chance to disconnect from the constant stream of thoughts and find a moment of peace amidst busy schedules. The space encourages them to slow down, breathe deeply, and let go of stress, even if just for a little while.

Positive Mental Health Awareness Week

This week we celebrated ‘Positive Mental Health Awareness Week’. It was an exciting event, which promoted Well-being and raised awareness about mental health. The week was filled with engaging activities and fun events.

One of the highlights of the week was “Wacky Wednesday,” a day dedicated to humor and lightheartedness, under the motto "Laughter is the best medicine!" The school enjoyed some fun and laughter. Wacky Wednesday featured all kinds of quirky activities, from jokes wearing wacky wigs and glasses.

A special Thanks to our 5th-year comedians: Sarah, Rebecca, Cathal, and Ewan. Their sense of humor and wacky antics brought smiles to everyone’s faces. They took to the corridors with a series of funny outfits and jokes that had the classes laughing. Their performances not only entertained but also highlighted the importance of humor in dealing with everyday stress and anxiety.

Throughout Positive Mental Health Awareness Week, St. Nathy’s College aimed to encourage open conversations about mental health and promote practices that support emotional well-being. Events like Wacky Wednesday served as a reminder that even small moments of joy can make a big difference. The week was a success in creating a supportive environment where students felt connected, uplifted, and empowered to prioritise their mental health.

A special word of Thanks to Ms. A. Beirne for all her effort, help and advice.

St. Nathy’s College Gears Up for Another Theatrical Triumph: “Illegally Blonde” is on the Way!

Excitement is in the air as our enthusiastic TY cohort get ready to shine with another Musical. Following the success of last year’s spectacular “Mama Mia, Papa Mia!”—which packed the PE Hall to capacity for three consecutive nights—this year’s TY students are ready to pick up the gauntlet and take the stage by storm to bring Broadway to Ballaghadreen with their own rendition of Illegally Blonde. Preparations are well underway, and the atmosphere is positively buzzing as the cast and crew bring this ambitious production to life.

This year’s TY students know they have a tough act to follow. “Mama Mia, Papa Mia!” set the bar high. It’s not every day that a school musical draws such crowds, but the talented cast and dedicated crew last year truly set a new standard for what is possible at St. Nathy’s with our maiden musical. Determined to meet—and exceed—those high expectations, this year’s cast and crew are reaching for the stars, and are promising to make Illegally Blonde even bigger, bolder, and more dazzling than ever.

Congratulations to all those who have successfully secured roles in the cast so far! The talent that emerged from the auditions was truly impressive, and we are eager to see these talented students take on this project. The preparations have already begun in earnest. The PE Hall is buzzing with activity under the watchful eye of our very talented Director Mr. Peter McLoughlin. Stage construction is well underway, with crew members busily cutting, sawing, and drilling to build a set that will capture the lively and colorful world of Illegally Blonde.  The hall is filled with the sounds of singing, dancing, and laughter. With so much dedication on display, there’s no doubt that the students will pull it off.

This year we are delighted to welcome Ms. Stack to the Musical team as Music Director. She is an All- Ireland Fleadh winner and has a Diploma in Musical theatre. She has a wealth of experience and is delighted to be involved with the wonderful group of Transition year students.  Already she has her choir in place and the hall is ringing with some magical musical numbers from the show.

The script, filled with witty dialogue (and from what I heard today, it is indeed very witty) and catchy songs, will not only entertain but also inspire both the cast and the audience alike.

Make sure to mark your calendars for next March, when Illegally Blonde will take to the stage! Keep an eye out for more details in the coming months about tickets, showtimes, and the full cast list. With the momentum building, it’s shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated events in St. Nathy’s.

So, watch this space and keep your diaries free. The countdown to Illegally Blonde has officially begun, and if the energy in the PE Hall is anything to go by, Ballaghaderreen is in for a theatrical experience like no other. Get ready to be wowed!

More details to follow very soon. Stay tuned in, follow our socials and talk to any of our fantastic TY students, then prepare to be dazzled!

Throughout the week, our daily Maths Puzzles were broadcast over the intercom, bringing a buzz of excitement to every classroom as students worked together to solve them. Meanwhile, our Maths teachers challenged their classes with brainteasers from the popular gameshow ‘The 1% Club.’ Well done to everyone who answered all questions correctly and joined the elite 1% Club.Overall, Maths Week 2024 was a great opportunity for students to engage with mathematics in a fun and competitive way. Safe Cycling for St. Nathy’s TY classes

Our Transition Year students are taking part in a three-week 'Learn to cycle course', where they are learning to cycle with "Cycle Right". Throughout the course, our students will not only improve their cycling abilities but also develop essential road safety skills, including bicycle maintenance and road awareness.

Cycling offers significant benefits, not just for physical fitness but also for mental health and overall well-being, allowing students to connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors. Knowing how to cycle is an important life skill, and we would like to thank ‘Roscommon Sports Partnership’ and Ms. Scally, the TY coordinator, for organising this valuable and educational program.  They are looking forward to putting their skills to the test next Wednesday when they go for a cycle around Ballaghaderreen.

Bodhrán making workshop for TY Students.

Our Transition Year students recently took part in a hands-on bodhrán-making workshop, ( given by Michael Vignoles) immersing themselves in a piece of Ireland's rich cultural heritage. The workshop brought together students from various backgrounds, allowing everyone to experience a cherished aspect of Irish tradition.

The process began with students sanding down the rough edges of wooden frames and drilling holes for wooden supports. Once the frames were ready, each student received a goatskin, which was soaked in water to soften it for easier handling. Afterward, they secured the goatskin to the wooden frame, using elastic bands to hold it in place temporarily, followed by metal thumbtacks to fasten it permanently.

While the goatskin dried, students took the opportunity to decorate their drums. They used stencils featuring Celtic designs and acrylic paints, personalizing their bodhráns with unique and creative artwork.

To conclude the workshop, our talented instructor Michael gave valuable tips and techniques to help students refine their craftsmanship. By the end of the day, each student left with a fully functional bodhrán and a deeper appreciation for Irish music and traditional craftsmanship. It was a rewarding experience that gave everyone a new-found respect for this iconic Irish instrument.
