Forensic Fun Workshop
Forensic Fun: A Day of Discovery for Transition Year Students
Transition Year students at our school experienced an exciting and educational workshop titled “Forensic Fun” on November 19th. The event, led by the engaging Allison Leck, provided a captivating look into one of history’s most debated momentsâthe assassination of John F. Kennedy. Through hands-on activities and cutting-edge technology, students explored the science behind forensic investigation while delving deep into the events of November 22, 1963.
The workshop kicked off with an overview of JFK’s assassination, setting the stage for a day of discovery. Students learned about the tragic events that unfolded in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, and how they shocked the world. Allison then introduced a range of interactive activities that brought forensic science to life.
One of the highlights was the demonstration of how fingerprints are revealed. Students were fascinated to see how such small details could hold such significant importance in solving crimes. A microscope session added to the excitement as students observed intricate details of their skin and eyebrows up close. This gave students a deeper appreciation of the precision and detail involved in forensic investigations.
The excitement did not stop there. Each student received an investigator sheet and embarked on a self-guided exploration. The hall was transformed into an immersive learning environment with various information stations. These stations were packed with intriguing facts about the assassination, including details on the firearms and ammunition used, an analysis of JFKâs injuries, and an examination of the conspiracy theories that have surrounded the case for decades.
Perhaps the most striking element of the day was the Virtual Reality (VR) experience. Students donned VR headsets to explore a 3D recreation of the assassination, giving them a unique perspective on the events as they unfolded. This cutting-edge technology brought history to life in a way that no textbook could achieve, allowing students to feel as if they were right there in 1963.
The day concluded with a detailed discussion led by Allison, highlighting the various interpretations of what occurred and the peculiarities of the investigation. This session encouraged critical thinking, as students debated the facts, theories, and unanswered questions surrounding the assassination.
The workshop was a resounding success, offering students a blend of historical insight, scientific exploration, and modern technology. It provided a unique opportunity to learn about forensic science in a real-world context while sparking curiosity about one of history’s great mysteries.
A big thank you to Allison Leck for her expertise and enthusiasm, which made the day both entertaining and educational. The “Forensic Fun” workshop was an unforgettable experience, leaving students eager to explore more about the fascinating world of forensic science.
