‘A Conversation with Our MEP 2024’

LCA1 and LCA2 Students Join ‘A Conversation with Your MEP 2024’

LCA1 and LCA2 students recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in ‘A Conversation with Your MEP 2024’, a Communicating Europe event supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade. The event featured Maria Walsh, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Midlands-North-West region, who shared her inspiring journey into politics and provided valuable insights into the workings of the European Union.

Maria began her talk by reflecting on her early life in both Ireland and the United States. She shared how her diverse experiences shaped her decision to enter politics, culminating in her successful campaign for the European Parliament in 2019. Maria spoke candidly about the challenges and motivations that led her to pursue a career in public service, highlighting how her personal experiences shaped her commitment to representing her constituents in the EU.

The students were then given a deeper understanding of Maria’s daily work in the European Parliament. She explained the various committees she is involved in, which focus on key issues such as environmental policy, social rights, and economic development. This insight gave the students a real sense of the impact that MEPs have on shaping European policy and the role of the EU in everyday life.

One of the most engaging parts of the session was the interactive Q&A, where students had the chance to ask Maria questions about topics that matter most to them. Issues such as climate change, youth opportunities, and the future of Europe sparked thoughtful discussions, allowing the students to connect directly with their MEP and gain a deeper understanding of her work.

The event also highlighted the many career opportunities available within the European Union. Maria shared valuable information about the different career paths students could pursue in areas such as policy-making, international relations, and EU communications. This gave the students plenty of food for thought about potential future careers.

To conclude the session, a fun and educational Kahoot quiz tested the students on the key points they had learned throughout the talk. The quiz was a lively way to reinforce the topics discussed and ensure the students left with a solid understanding of European politics.

The event was an enriching experience that inspired students to think critically about the role of the EU and their own potential futures within it.
