St Nathy’s U15 Girls Secure Fourth Connacht Title

On a stormy day across the country, St Nathy’s U15 girls’ soccer team lined out against Gort Community School in the Connacht Final at Athlone Town Stadium. While the weather threatened disruption, conditions held just long enough for both teams to contest a high-quality and competitive final.
The opening exchanges were tense, and Gort nearly took an early lead in the 8th minute when their striker broke through on goal. Goalkeeper Aurelia McElroy reacted quickly, sprinting off her line and smothering the ball in a well-timed intervention to deny what looked a strong scoring opportunity. It was an early reminder of the threat Gort carried throughout the game.
St Nathy’s enjoyed spells of attacking pressure, though credit must be given to Gort’s defence, who remained organised and worked tirelessly to limit space and chances. Gort’s work rate and willingness to press ensured the game remained closely contested for much of the first half. The breakthrough eventually came in the 24th minute when Ciara McCann finished a well-worked move to give St Nathy’s a 1–0 lead. Unfortunately, McCann picked up an injury in the act of scoring, but her goal proved decisive going into half-time.
The second half saw St Nathy’s settle into their rhythm. In the 45th minute, Sadhbh Dillon produced a strong individual run, evading several defenders before finishing confidently to extend the lead.
Ciara McCann returned to the action shortly afterwards, and her influence was clear. In the 55th minute, she was played through by a well-weighted assist and calmly finished to make it 3–0. Despite the scoreline, Gort continued to compete until the final whistle and showed commendable resilience in difficult conditions.
Defensively, St Nathy’s were composed throughout the contest. A disciplined back four, led by captain Ella Hunt, limited clear chances, while Natasha Jackson stood out with three timely slide tackles, reflecting the promise she has shown all season.
In midfield, Orla Molloy, Kaylan McHugh, Sadhbh Dillon and Sienna Mulleady worked effectively to control possession and disrupt Gort’s build-up play.
Up front, Eloise McDonnell partnered McCann and consistently applied pressure, using her movement and work rate to occupy defenders and create space for others.
It is also important to acknowledge the contribution of the substitutes, whose role proved vital throughout the campaign. Players coming off the bench made significant impacts during the group stages, semi-final and final, ensuring standards remained high whenever called upon. This Connacht title was very much a collective achievement, built on commitment, depth and teamwork across the entire panel.
This victory secures St Nathy’s fourth Connacht title since soccer returned to the college, underlining the consistency of the programme and the commitment of the players and coaches. Gort Community School can take great pride in their performance and the progress of their squad, pushing a strong St Nathy’s side throughout the final.
