A Joyous Start to the New School Year at St. Nathy’s Cathedral

This week, our school community gathered in the Cathedral to celebrate the beginning of a new academic year. The Mass, led by Bishop Doran, Principal Fr. Henry, and PP Fr. Kivlehan, was especially meaningful as it marked the first time the whole school came together in this academic year. It was also a milestone for our new First Year students, who are beginning their 5–6 year journey through secondary school.

The ceremony opened in a spirit of renewal, encouraging us to be “enthusiastic in our studies and courageous in embracing new opportunities.” The readings, thoughtfully selected, inspired reflection and optimism, setting the tone for a positive and inclusive year of teaching and learning.

The offertory gifts were chosen to symbolise different aspects of our school life: a candle representing Christ, the light of the world; a crucifix reflecting our prayer and faith; a book symbolising learning and knowledge; and a football with a games board representing the fun and friendships we share. Finally, a school jumper bearing our crest reminded us of the many blessings and gifts that come from belonging to the St. Nathy’s community.

A highlight of the celebration was the music, beautifully performed by Mr. Cotter’s choir. Their dedication shone through as their harmonies filled the Cathedral. Accompanied by Mr. Cotter on piano, the choir’s singing lifted the occasion, while our two concertina soloists, Aisling Maloney and Megan Walsh, added graceful melodies that enriched the liturgy even further.

We owe a sincere word of thanks to all who worked so diligently behind the scenes to prepare the Mass, especially Ms. Staunton and Ms. Powell of the RE Department. It was a truly wonderful beginning to what we hope will be a successful, inclusive, and joy-filled year for everyone at St. Nathy’s.
