Knock Visit

On the Friday the 8th of October 2013, the transition year class of St.Nathy’s college went to a Youth Gathering in Knock Shrine. Our day began with a trip to the Basilica, where people spoke to us about how God came into their lives. One of the speakers was called Ger; he was a goal keeper for Ireland from when he was 14 to 19. He still plays professional soccer for Galway united. He found God in his life when he was 15 after a day in Knock. He told us that as his friends were going drinking, he felt that it was wrong. He was not happy with himself until he found God. There were two other speakers. St. Anna, one of Mother Teresa’s sisters, told us about her life, she joined Mother Teresa’s sisters at a young age of 15. The final speaker was a man who had been a drug addict and an alcoholic. He got over his addictions through prayer, one prayer he found helpful was the Rosary, introduced to him by a local lady who held prayer meetings. We had an hour for lunch, where we ate and walked around the grounds of knock Shrine. We also walked down the little village of Knock, going into a few shops looking at what you could buy. We met back to the Basilica for Mass. During the Mass the Papal Nuncie was there and many bishops and priests were there too. As a gift, we got a copy of ‘You Cat’, rosary beads and two book marks with prayers on them. Each has been blessed and will be treasured. We all agreed that it had been a worthwhile day as we returned to school at 5 o’clock.

Under 19 girls’ basketball game

On Tuesday the 8th of October our schools basketball team went up to Dublin to play a secondary school named “Mucross Park College”. There were 17 girls on our team and 15 on the oppositions team. This game was part of the schools cup in the C division. The girls first got warmed up and got ready to play. The five girls who were put on to play at the start of the match were; Aoibheann Durkin, Sharon Towey, Rebecca Finan, Ellen and Jean Flannigan. After at least a minute of game play it was obvious that St. Nathy’s has the ball far more often than Mucross did. During the first quarter Aoibheann Durkin of Ballaghaderreen got hit in the nose which led to a nose bleed and so she was taken off and replaced with Kelly Coleman who played for the rest of the quarter. When the second quarter began Aoibheann came back on to play. Mucross Park began to come back and score more points. Laura McHugh was put on for Sharon Towey in this quarter and played very well. In the Third quarter Aoibheann played extremely well scoring six points. In the final quarter Nathy’s were ahead by a few pints so there were more people put on and off, as Cathriona McDermott was put on for Laura McHugh and scored a basket pretty soon after being put on. She was taken off for Sharon Towey as the game began to get tight. After the other team scored two points, which led to the score being even as the buzzer rang. The score was 38 points to 38 points, which led to five minutes of extra time. Nathy’s started straight into it and got two points, which made it look good but then Mucross came back. After about two minutes before the end of the game the score was even, at 40 points, until Mucross were fowled and got two free shots. They scored one of the two shots which led them on to win the match by one point (41-40), knocking St. Nathy’s out of the schools cup. The girls put on a magnificent performance and we look forward to seeing them play again soon. Well done girls

Ploughing Championships 2013

On the 25th of September, Wednesday last, the Transition Year group from St. Nathy’s College headed for Ratheniska, Stradbally, Co. Laois for the Ploughing Championships 2013. The group of 26 students left Ballaghaderreen at 6.45 am along with two teachers Mr. Lennon and Ms. Munnelly. We stopped in Tullamore at 8 am to get something quick to eat and we all got back on the bus and hit off again. We arrived in Ratheniska at 10.45 am to a crowd of 187,000 people and 1,300 exhibitors and the sun beaming down on our faces.  When we got off the bus there was a tractor and trailer waiting for us to bring us to the entrance. It was a tight squeeze to fit two bus loads, including ours, into the trailer. We handed in our tickets and we headed in. We were split into groups so that no one would get lost.

We walked around looking at what each tent had to offer and picked up any bits that were going for free. We all met back at about 12.15 to get food. We continued looking at each tent until we got to the funfair. We spent a little while there on each of the rides. We had all arranged to meet back up at 4 pm at the gate and we would all head back to the bus together. We got the trailer back to the bus again and all boarded the bus. It took us an hour just to leave the car park as everyone seemed to be leaving at the same time. We finally got on the road and were on our way home.

We all had a sing song and were talking all the way home. We agreed that the highlights of the day included the vintage cars and tractors, all the different tents and stalls and the funfair. We decided to stop in Supermacs in Roscommon to get a something to eat before we arrived home. Soon after we were on the road again, it didn’t take us long to arrive in Ballaghaderreen.  We got to Ballaghaderreen at 9pm, and all our parents were waiting for us.

Everyone really enjoyed their day, and hopes it’s just as good next year.

Cyber-Bullying

A note for Parents and Students on Cyber-Bullying and the misuse of Social Media and Internet: All schools and all parents are increasingly conscious of the impact of bullying, in particular the less familiar forms of cyber bullying.  Parents play the primary role in protecting their children from the effects of both. In addition, all schools are developing and reviewing policies that relate to students use of internet and social media.  While we celebrate the positive contribution that the internet is having on education we are also concerned of the potential harm that it can cause.
