Under 19 girlsâ basketball game
On Tuesday the 8th of October our schools basketball team went up to Dublin to play a secondary school named âMucross Park Collegeâ. There were 17 girls on our team and 15 on the oppositions team. This game was part of the schools cup in the C division.
The girls first got warmed up and got ready to play. The five girls who were put on to play at the start of the match were; Aoibheann Durkin, Sharon Towey, Rebecca Finan, Ellen and Jean Flannigan.
After at least a minute of game play it was obvious that St. Nathyâs has the ball far more often than Mucross did. During the first quarter Aoibheann Durkin of Ballaghaderreen got hit in the nose which led to a nose bleed and so she was taken off and replaced with Kelly Coleman who played for the rest of the quarter.
When the second quarter began Aoibheann came back on to play. Mucross Park began to come back and score more points. Laura McHugh was put on for Sharon Towey in this quarter and played very well.
In the Third quarter Aoibheann played extremely well scoring six points. In the final quarter Nathyâs were ahead by a few pints so there were more people put on and off, as Cathriona McDermott was put on for Laura McHugh and scored a basket pretty soon after being put on. She was taken off for Sharon Towey as the game began to get tight. After the other team scored two points, which led to the score being even as the buzzer rang. The score was 38 points to 38 points, which led to five minutes of extra time.
Nathyâs started straight into it and got two points, which made it look good but then Mucross came back. After about two minutes before the end of the game the score was even, at 40 points, until Mucross were fowled and got two free shots. They scored one of the two shots which led them on to win the match by one point (41-40), knocking St. Nathyâs out of the schools cup.
The girls put on a magnificent performance and we look forward to seeing them play again soon. Well done girls
