Leaving Certificate Geographical Investigation

On Tuesday, the 1st of October our Leaving Certificate Geography students under the guidance of their teachers, Mr. Curley, Mr. Curran and Ms. Brunker completed their Geographical Investigation. The Geographical Investigation is worth 20% of their overall grade in this subject.

The title of the investigation is "A study of how the geomorphic processes of transportation and deposition impact the development of landforms in a coastal environment."

The investigation was conducted at Carrowhubbuck.

Now that the fieldwork is complete, the students will turn their attention to preparing their reporting booklets, which detail their findings and observations. These booklets will be submitted digitally through the Schools Portal and forwarded to the State Examinations Commission (SEC). Alongside their written examination, the investigation will be graded as part of the overall Leaving Certificate Geography assessment.

This practical experience not only enhances their understanding of key geographical concepts but also contributes significantly to their final examination results.

St. Nathy’s celebrate the beginning of new School year

A Joyful Beginning to the New School Year at St. Nathy’s Cathedral

On Wednesday last, St. Nathy’s College gathered in our Cathedral to celebrate the beginning of our new school year. The special Mass, officiated by Bishop Doran, Our Principal Fr. Henry and PP Fr. Kivlehan, marked the first time the entire school body came together in the new academic year. It was particularly special as it was the first time our new First Year students gathered with us for what will be their new 5/6-year journey through secondary school.

The Mass began with the air of new beginnings. The significance of the occasion was heightened by the carefully selected readings, which encouraged reflection and hope for the year ahead. These thought-provoking passages invited both students and staff to contemplate their goals, aspirations, and positivity, to create a positive, productive and inclusive Teaching and Learning environment for all.

Fr. Henry and Fr. Kivlehan, both familiar faces to the school community, offered words of wisdom and encouragement, reminding everyone of the importance of kindness, effort, and togetherness in the journey ahead. Bishop Doran, spoke eloquently about the opportunities that a new school year brings—a fresh start for academic growth, personal development, and building strong relationships with one another. His words resonated with the entire congregation, who listened intently.

One of the highlights of the Mass was the beautiful music provided by Ms. Stack’s newly formed choir. The choir, a talented and harmonious group of students, performed wonderfully, bringing a sense of peace and joy to the mass. They were ably supported by Ms. Gordon and Ms. Kielty. The music was uplifting, with moving renditions of “Christ be Our Light” and a memorable finale of “May the Road Rise to Meet You,” which left a lasting impression on all in attendance.

As the Mass ended, rapturous applause filled the cathedral, and there was an air of ‘Feel Good’ and ‘Solidarity’ amongst our new St. Nathy’s family. The entire service was a beautiful start to what we all hope will be a successful, inclusive, productive, and positive new school year.

St. Nathy’s success over St. Attracta’s

St. Nathy’s First Years staged an incredible comeback to claim a 3-4 to 1-6 victory over St. Attracta’s, Tubbercurry, in a thrilling encounter.

The match started poorly for St. Nathy’s, with St. Attracta’s dominating the early exchanges. Goalkeeper Isaac Duffy was called into action multiple times, pulling off a series of brilliant saves to keep his team in the game. However, St. Attracta’s relentless pressure eventually broke through, and they buried the ball in the net, leaving St. Nathy’s trailing 1-6 to 0-2 at half-time.

A riveting half-time team talk inspired the young St. Nathy’s squad, who came out fighting in the second half. Daithi Finn took center stage, winning a crucial penalty that he converted, sparking a wave of momentum for his side. Daithi then added two more well-taken goals, pushing St. Nathy’s into the lead and completing his hat-trick.

With Isaac Duffy continuing his heroic display in goal and a determined defensive effort from the entire team, St. Nathy’s kept St. Attracta’s at bay. Late points from Lorcan Flanagan and Richie Conway ensured victory for St. Nathy’s, sealing a remarkable 3-4 to 1-6 win.

It was a brave and disciplined team performance, with Daithi Finn’s scoring prowess and Isaac Duffy’s goalkeeping standing out in what turned out to be a memorable day for St. Nathy’s.  Well done all.
