Connaught Indoor Athletics

On the 24th of April, a squad of 30 athletes represented St Nathy’s at the Connaught Indoors Competition held in TUS Athlone.
This was a participatory event, affording the opportunity to 1st,2nd and TY students to experience competing in an athletics event, at one of Ireland’s best indoor athletics facilities.
The events on offer were the shot put, long jump, and high jump. 600m, 60m and 4 x 200m relay.
We had a fantastic day in Athlone, and we are so proud of each one of our students, who put themselves forward – stepped out of their comfort zone to try something new.

The students looked fantastic in what was our first outing in our new athletics singlets- which gave them a boost of confidence and let all other schools and spectators know who we were!

We were represented in every event, with some really standout performances- Meabh Lavin ran a very well calculated and strategic 600m race and placed first with a time of 1:52, with second placed athlete coming in 4 seconds behind her!
Gordan Casey also ran a very smart and fast 600m race placing third in the TY category with a time of 1:38. Grace Henry has found a new athletic strength in the shot put, placing 3rd with a distance of 6.92m.
We also had 3rd place success for both our 2nd yr boys and 1st yr girls 4 x 200m relay.
We hope that this opportunity has ignited interest in the students in joining athletics, and made them aware that it’s fun to try new things!
