TY Students Enjoy a Festive Day Out Ice-Skating in Sligo!

On Monday, our Transition Year students headed to Sligo for a day packed with Christmas fun. First stop was Sligo on Ice, where they swapped shoes for skates and took to the rink. While there were a few wobbly starts, it wasn’t long before most were gliding confidently across the ice—though some were happy to accept a helping hand from the friendly polar bears!

After an hour of skating, laughter, and plenty of photo opportunities, students rounded off the trip with some last-minute Christmas shopping in town. It was a wonderful way to kick off the last week of school.

Congratulations to Eilís Taheny 5th Year

Euroscola Adventure: From 'Life Skills' Class to Strasbourg!

A huge congratulations to Eilís Taheny (5th Year), who recently returned from an unforgettable trip to Strasbourg, France as part of the Euroscola Programme. Eilís earned this incredible opportunity through her 'Life Skills' class with teacher Ms. Scally, proving that learning practical skills can open doors to amazing experiences!

Eilís joined 23 other students from across Ireland and three teachers for a jam-packed itinerary that mixed culture, education, and a little festive magic.

The adventure began with a flight from Dublin to Frankfurt, followed by a scenic trip to Colmar, a charming town famous for its Christmas markets. Here, the group soaked up the festive atmosphere, sampled local treats, and even enjoyed a ride on the Ferris wheel, a perfect start to the trip!

The highlight of the trip? A full day at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Students took part in interactive activities, engaged in debates, and met peers from across Europe—an experience that brought democracy to life. They learned firsthand how decisions are made at the heart of the EU and discovered the importance of active citizenship.

Beyond the Parliament, the group explored Strasbourg city, sampling delicious food and wandering through its picturesque streets. On the final day, they visited Heidelberg, home to a stunning castle perched above the city. A cable car ride down offered breathtaking views before the group headed back to the airport, full of memories and new friendships.

Eilís' trip was proudly sponsored by the Northern & Western Regional Assembly, making this educational adventure possible.

Who is Graduate.ie?

This amazing opportunity came through Graduate.ie – Active Citizenship & Democracy Programme. Since 2001, Graduate.ie has been on a mission to Engage, Inform & Inspire Young People about key local, national, and European topics.

Funded by Government, Local Authorities, and the EU, Graduate.ie gives students the chance to learn about democracy and citizenship while competing for prizes like educational trips to the European Parliament in Strasbourg in 2025/2026.

The Euroscola programme in Strasbourg brings together students from all over Europe for a hands-on experience of European parliamentary democracy.

Another Successful Christmas Market at St. Nathy’s

The air buzzed with excitement as the doors to St. Nathy’s Christmas Market opened last Thursday, revealing a veritable Aladdin’s cave of sweets, treats, and trinkets. This year’s market, organised by Transition Year and LCA1 Enterprise students, featured an impressive array of handcrafted goods, festive delicacies, and Christmas cheer, showing creativity and teamwork at their finest. Further up the market, seasonal scents of cinnamon, vanilla, and pine drifted from the stalls, adding to the ambiance.

Shoppers were spoiled for choice: bucket hats, slate and wooden coasters, mystery boxes, engraved bark art, cake pops, martini-shaped candles, rose petal candles, air fresheners, baseball caps, golf balls, pre-packed treats, chocolates, jelly babies, tree decorations, crocheted scrunchies, cute figurines, log candle holders, hurley-shaped medal holders, “Sniff Free” soles for runners, fresh organic hen and duck eggs, lip oils – and so much more, all sparkling under fairy lights!

Each class had a scheduled visit, and vendors were persuasive, leaving no stone unturned to win customers. Products flew off tables, and custom orders were taken for sold-out items. Negotiations were lively as students pitched their creations and shoppers haggled. Kudos to the sellers, who 'dressed to impress' on the day!

This was not just about gifts; it was a hands-on lesson in entrepreneurship. From brainstorming ideas to realistic pricing and marketing, students gained real business experience.

.Our TY Coordinator and Enterprise teachers praised their dedication and creativity. For students, it was a confidence boost, a business lesson, and a cherished memory.

Each student who purchased a gift received a ticket for the raffle. The lucky raffle winner was Luke Madden, who was presented with a beautiful hamper containing gifts from each stand by Jessica Smyth.

St. Nathy’s Carol Service 2025

Last Friday, December 12th, we gathered once again as a school community in St. Nathy’s Cathedral for our annual Christmas Carol Service. As always, it was a truly special occasion. The JPII and LCA students led the entrance procession with lighted candles, symbolising the light of Christ entering our lives. The choir, under the guidance of Mr. Cotter, and the trad group, mentored by Ms. Gordon, opened the festivities with “Joy to the World.” This uplifting hymn set the tone for the afternoon, reminding us of the joy and hope that Christ’s birth brings to the world.

The choir then sang “When a Child Is Born.” This hymn speaks of the promise and peace that a child’s birth brings, echoing the hope of a new dawn for humanity. Its gentle rhythm invites us to pause and consider the deeper meaning of Christmas.

Next came “Away in a Manger.” This beloved carol captures the innocence and simplicity of the Nativity scene, reminding us of the humble circumstances of Jesus’ birth.

A beautiful rendition of “Silent Night/Night of Silence” followed, evoking the serene and holy atmosphere of Bethlehem on the night of Christ’s birth.

The choir and soloists then performed “O Holy Night,” a powerful carol celebrating the profound joy of redemption through Christ’s birth.

The senior students took the lead in “O Little Town of Bethlehem.” This hymn paints a vivid picture of the quiet town where the greatest story began, reminding us that even in stillness and simplicity, God’s love shines brightly for all humanity.

As the service drew to a close, Sonya Radchenko, accompanied by Luke Halvey on piano, sang the penultimate hymn, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” This gentle, comforting song encourages us to cherish the warmth of family and friendship during the festive season.

Fr. Henry thanked everyone for their contributions, acknowledging Mr. Cotter, Ms. Gordon, Ms. Staunton, the choir, the JPII and LCA students, the readers, the soloists, the musicians, the staff, and all involved in making the service so special. He also expressed gratitude to Fr. Paul for making the Cathedral available for choir practice.

Finally, the congregation joined in “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” This triumphant hymn calls us to gather in joy and worship the newborn King. Its rousing chorus united voices in praise, perfectly concluding the afternoon with a spirit of faith and celebration.
