LC English Theatre Trip to Macbeth

“When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightening or in rain?” Well, there were 93 of us and the weather was more dark, gloomy, cold and with an eerie fog but it set the scene perfectly as our students in Leaving Cert set off at 6am for a live performance of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth! It has been nearly a year since these students studied it in English and in only a matter of months will be answering on it in Paper 2 of their Leaving Cert Mocks. A live refresher was very much welcomed!
Despite the very early start, we set off towards the Mill Street Theatre for the 10am performance. All were in good spirits, unlike the ones in Macbeth, but a much needed rest stop for some food and caffeine was called for an hour from Dublin.
Once we got there and were greeted by the manager, we were told that we were the first group to see this performance which would do two daily showings for the next month so we felt very lucky indeed. A two hour production, with brief interval, got underway and it must be said that the modern clothing and setting, paired with the language of the play as we know it was very effective. The lighting, music, staging and props all added to the intense play as we see our Tragic Hero descend into madness fuelled by death and pressure from those around him that invited evil into their lives. A moral tale still relevant today about doing good deeds, being rewarded and respected for them or else the consequences of leading a double life, putting on a mask to hide true intentions and ultimately, who would triumph in the battle over Good and Evil. We will not spoil it for those yet to read or see it!
It was an excellent opportunity for the students and teachers to see the tale brought to life right before their eyes and will no doubt help them in their understanding and application of the text in their exams next year.
After all the horrors and drama, some eating and shopping were called for in Dundrum Shopping Centre before heading back to buses for our journey back West.
It must be noted, once again, that our students did themselves and St. Nathy’s College proud throughout the entire day so thank you very much to them and we hope this has helped break up the term for you in this important year, as well as given you some guidance on this when undertaking your exams. We know you will do your very best and do yourselves, family and your school proud.
A sincere thanks to our LC English teachers for their help and guidance throughout the day too, so thank you Ms Mulhern, Ms Dugdale, Mr Creaton, Mr Nealon and Mr Brennan.
