Day 1: A Splash‑Filled Start to Our Rhineland Adventure
Monday Morning – Day 1
Early on Monday morning, March 23rd, we set off from Ballaghaderreen with forty‑seven transition year students and four teachers. All of us were a little sleepy but already feeling the excitement of the journey ahead. Even in the dim light of dawn, there was a quiet buzz as we loaded our bags and settled in for the start of our four‑day adventure in Germany’s Rhineland region.
After checking in, grabbing breakfast, and squeezing in some quick shopping, we made our way to our flight bound for Düsseldorf. Once we landed, we were welcomed by our guide, Katya, whose warm energy immediately set the tone for the days ahead.
Our first stop was Aqualand, where the afternoon unfolded in a mix of laughter, adrenaline, and relaxation. Some of us headed straight for the biggest and boldest slides the water park had to offer, while others preferred the calmer pace of the pools and jacuzzi. It was the perfect way to shake off the travel fatigue.
From there, we continued to Cologne, and as evening fell, the city centre came alive around us. Walking through its streets at night felt both vibrant and atmospheric, and the sight of the Cologne Cathedral, illuminated against the dark sky, was nothing short of breathtaking.
We rounded off the evening with dinner at the Hard Rock Café, enjoying good food and the lively atmosphere before heading to our hotel. By the time we checked in, the day’s excitement had caught up with us, and everyone was more than ready for a well‑earned night’s sleep, eager to wake refreshed for Day 2.
