Connacht Athletics

Congratulations to all our athletes who competed at the outdoor Connacht Schools Athletics competition in Athlone last Friday. St Nathys was well represented in both track and field events , with athletes competing in javelin, shot put, long jump, 100m , 200m and 800m. We also had 4 relay teams Minor girls, Junior girls, Junior Boys and Intermediate Boys in the 4 x 100.

All of these athletes qualified from the South Connacht Regional competition in order to compete at this competition. We couldn’t have been more proud of our athletes with all of them setting PBs and improving significantly on their qualifying times/distances.

Huge congratulations to Mila Clancy and Grace Henry who have both qualified to the All Ireland final, June 2nd and 3rd in Tullamore. Mila will compete in the Junior girls long jump and 200m. Grace will compete in the shot putt. Mila ran an exceptionally strong 200m race clocking in at 26.96, shaving almost a second off her qualifying time. Grace excelled under pressure after fouling her first two throws, she threw 7m 40 to secure 3rd place and to see her through to the all Irelands! This was almost a metre further than her qualifying distance, all down to her consistency and determination in training.

We had fantastic athletic displays from all our athletes but notably Evan Powell – Senior Boys 800m who ran 6 seconds faster than his qualifying time and setting a PB of 2.06. Meabh Lavin in her second ever 800m race, was up against two national champions and she held her own, coming in , in 4th place with an amazing time of 2.36, which was actually faster than the winning time of the Junior girls 800m!

Our relay teams provided us with a specatular display of team work, grit and determination! Our Minor girls team (Saerlaith Dillon, Rebecca Brett, Meabh Lavin, Lucia Mc Donnell) placed 3rd in a time of 57.11.
Junior girls team (Serena Hanly, Annie Mai Giblin, Tori Duffy, Mila Clancy, sub Sinead Morris ) placed 7th ,56.81 amongst a highly competitive field of teams.
Junior Boys (Uneeb Faraazi, Mohammad Younas, Sean Buckley, James Cassidy, Nathaniel Cooney 5th, 51.51 and Intermediate Boys, (Noah Phillips, Conor Kuksta, Gordon Casey, Bredas Pocius) 4th 48.35.
