Syrian Small Broad Bean Project
In 2019 Irish Seed Savers Received the Syrian small broad bean seed from Liam Gaffney, a long-term supporter and collaborator from Nairn Scotland. In his words “The conflict in Syria has been devastating for farmers and the country’s position as “the breadbasket of the Middle East”. It is important to conserve as much as we can of Syria’s food heritage by growing their vegetables and sharing the seed with others.”
One of our EAL students here in St. Nathy’s, Sidra from Syria, planted the small broad beans in the school’s polytunnel during Horticulture class in an effort to bring a little of her home of origin to Ballaghaderreen. The project has really is a great success so far.
