Most Reverend Paul Dempsey

St. Nathy’s College was established by the Priests of the Diocese of Achonry in 1810. The College Trustee is the Bishop of Achonry.

 

Most Reverend Paul Dempsey is the Bishop of Achonry. He was born in Carlow town but shortly afterwards his family moved to live in Athy, Co. Kildare. Bishop Paul went to school in Athy and was educated by the Christian Brothers at primary and post-primary school. In 1989 he began his studies for the priesthood and was ordained a priest on 6 July 1997. During the years after his ordi-nation, he served in various parishes in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin. He also presented a re-ligious affairs programme on local radio. He was later appointed as Youth and Vocations Director for the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.

 

In 2008 he completed a Masters Degree in Theology.

 

The focus of this academic work was his thesis entitled “The Contemporary Irish Catholic Church – A Church in Crisis or in Question?” On 27 January 2020 he was appointed Bishop of Achonry by Pope Francis. He was ordained Bish-op of Achonry on 30 August 2020 in St. Nathy’s Cathedral.
