HOME SCHOOL LIAISON:
Home School Co-ordinator
Helping your child settle into second level schooling
Home School Links
St. Nathy’s College is part of the Department
of Education and Science’s Home School Liaison Scheme. Thus means that
a member of staff works full-time to support parents in helping their
children to benefit from the school system. The co-ordinator of the
scheme is available to parents throughout the school day to discuss
any worries, concerns or to answer any questions they may have.
An induction course for first-years is held
in September. Trained personnel will work with the students to help
make the transition from primary to secondary school as smooth as possible.
Each student will have a Mentor from a senior class who will explain
the timetable and the school system to them.
Home visitation
The co-ordinator will try and visit as many
homes of First Year students as possible during the year to ensure that
children have settled in well and are happy in the school.
Settling In –How parents
can help
Encourage your child to make a good start.
Praise good work and good behaviour. Set a pattern of study from the
beginning - agree a time, place for homework and a time for leisure
activities.
Give Practical Help:
- Have a fixed time for getting up.
- Encourage your child to have a healthy breakfast
- Read over timetable with your child and encourage
him/her to put a copy in his / her bedroom.
Help him/ her to organize the proper books and equipment for school
on the previous night by checking what is needed against the timetable.
Contact the school early
if there is a problem or concern.
Listen: This is a time of great change
for a young student and his / her family. It is important to listen
and show interest in what is happening.
Enjoy: Make the most of, and enjoy, the many opportunities and
supports the school can offer.
