St.
Nathy’s College in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon is the Diocesan
College for the diocese of Achonry. It traces its origins back to at
least 1810, making it one of the oldest second level schools in the
country.
From a humble Classical School in the early 1800s, the school has survived such events as the Great Famine, two World Wars and a Civil War as well as having coped in the midst of many other periods of political instability and social upheaval.
In 1995 St. Nathy’s College amalgamated with St. Joseph’s Mercy Secondary School and the Ballaghaderreen Vocational School. What emerged was a powerful educational force drawing its energy and vibrancy from the traditions and strengths of all three former schools.
This documentary on St. Nathy’s College was filmed over the course of 2010.
As well as introducing and providing an outline of the present day school community, it strives to give an insight into the origins, history, ethos and traditions of this 200 year old College. Great credit is due to the staff and pupils (past and present) who contributed to its making.
